Adapte Documentation

Every guided tour, in-context tip, and reference explanation shown inside the app, gathered in one place. This mirrors what's actually wired up in the app right now — nothing here is aspirational or planned.

Getting Started: Home Screen

A note on times: By default times are shown for the current city in that city's time zone, not local. Selecting your current city will of course show the current time, but selecting a city elsewhere will show weather data and time listings in that city's time zone. This is editable in Settings.

Settings button — Settings button opens Adapte Settings. This is where you can set notification times, turn on national hazard alerts, set the measurements you prefer, and much more.

Mode button — Mode button changes between Light and Dark mode.

EN Language button — Language button (English by default) lets you change Adapte's display language at any time.

Map toggle (only visible on Tablets with Show Weather Map turned on in Settings) — Tap the map tab to show the map. Tapping a location on the map will search for that city and find its weather details.

Temperature button — Temperature button changes between Celsius and Fahrenheit temperature values.

Refresh button — Refresh button refreshes the weather data. Note that it will only refresh if enough time has passed (set in Settings), or if the service has new data. If you do not see a change, no new data is available yet.

Past tab — Only visible if Past Weather Data is turned on in Settings. Tap to show the Past Weather Data tab, where you can choose to store weather data as it is collected or download already recorded past data as far back as 1940.

Chart tab — Shows the Weekly chart, showing the daily high and low as an error bar chart, with options to show bars for most other data types (Rain/Snow expected, allergens, UV index, and much more).

  • Long-press on a chip to see details about that chip.
  • Drag the chart left or right to see other days.
  • Tap on a day to jump to that day's details.

City tab — Tap the City Search tab to show the city search window. By default this is Paris, but entering a different city gets that city's weather data.

  • Add city icon — Lets you add the current city name to the city list for easy reference and to allow getting notifications.
  • Default city icon (filled) — Default City icon (wide arrow) will be filled if the current city is set as the default. The default city loads when you open Adapte.
  • Default city icon (outlined) — If it is outlined that means it is not default. Tapping the outlined default city icon will make the current city the new Adapte default, which loads when you start Adapte.

Maps tab — Only visible if Past Weather Data is turned on in Settings. Tap to show the Historical Weather Data tab, where you can choose to store weather data as it is collected or download already recorded past data as far back as 1940.

Weekly chart — Shows the high and low, and other details depending on what chips you select. Tap a day on this chart to jump to its detail.

Daily chart — Tap an hour on this chart to zoom in for a closer look. You can also turn on a Day/Night gradient, twilight icons, and hazard indicators for this chart in Settings > Daily Chart Options. (Tap toggles zoom in and out; long-press pins values — see Chart Interactions below.)

Loading banner — Details about what Adapte is loading in the background like weather, alert, or widget data. You may use the app normally while they load.

Settings Screen

Another, shorter tutorial shows the first time you open Settings:

  1. Bug Reporting toggle — Turning bug reporting on shows the Bug Report button, letting you send us details of what went wrong or general feedback.
  2. Search field — Use this search box to quickly find a specific setting instead of scrolling through every section.
  3. Section headers — Tap a section's title to collapse or expand it - your preference is remembered.

Units, Formats & Language

  • Temperature: Celsius or Fahrenheit.
  • Wind speed: m/s, km/h, mph, or knots.
  • Air pollutant units: µg/m³ or ppm (pollen always shows as grains/m³).
  • Date format: six options, from a short style to a full day-and-month style.
  • Time format: 24-hour or locale-aware 12-hour.
  • Language: 14 languages are available with English as the default
    • The first time the app starts it will detect the device language and ask if you wish to use that, with all other languages as options.
    • Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Dari, English, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Pashto, Portuguese, Spanish, Ukrainian.
    • Change the language any time from the Language button on the home screen — no restart needed.

Chart Interactions: Zoom and Pin

Both the hourly chart (inside each day card) and the Past tab's history chart share one gesture set. The first time you tap either one, Adapte shows:

Chart Tips
Tap the chart to zoom in. Tap again to zoom out.

Long-press anywhere to pin that day's values on the chart.
Long-press near a pin (not its text) to remove it.
  • Tap, from the full view, zooms in centered on wherever you tapped. Tap again anywhere to zoom back out — there's no separate "reset" gesture to remember.
  • Long-press an empty point to pin its exact values right on the chart. Multiple points can be pinned at once.
  • Long-press near an existing pin (its marker line, not the text box) to remove just that one.
  • On the Past tab, tapping a detected pattern in Notable Patterns (see Past Weather Data & Trends) zooms the history chart straight to that pattern's date range and adds its metric as a plotted line — this counts as zoomed in, so a plain tap afterward zooms back out.

Severity Levels

Every hazard Adapte tracks — heat, cold, storm instability (CAPE), UV, wind gusts, marine waves, and river flooding — is rated on the same five-step scale, reflected consistently in icon colors across the app (chart chips, hazard icons, notifications):

Icon Key

Icon Key screen is accessible by tapping any icon on the hourly list.

It is a visual glossary of every icon Adapte uses — national weather-alert warning icons, sky / condition icons (rain, snow, fog, thunderstorms, etc.), and Adapte's own hazard-type icons shown at each of the five severity levels above.

Weekly & Daily Chart Data Chips

The weekly chart's chips (Settings > Chart Options) each carry their own explanation, shown as an in-app tooltip:

HailDaily peak Significant Hail Parameter (SHiP), a NOAA Storm Prediction Center index — values above 1 mark an environment likely for large 5 cm+ (2 in+) hail. Not a probability or a guaranteed hail size
WindDaily peak sustained wind speed
Wind GustsDaily peak wind gust speed — brief bursts above the sustained wind speed
TornadoDaily peak instability multiplied by wind shear (the Craven-Brooks Significant Severe Parameter) — higher values mean a greater chance of significant severe weather, including strong tornadoes
Wave HeightDaily peak wave height for coastal and open-water conditions
Wind Wave HeightDaily peak wind-driven wave height — the locally wind-generated part of the sea state, separate from swell
Flood RiskDaily forecasted river flow rate for a waterway near this location, colored by flood risk level. Uses data from a ~5 km (3 mi) resolution global model. This means small or mountain rivers may not be represented accurately — a low reading here does not rule out dangerous flash flooding in steep or mountainous terrain
Day / NightShades each day with a gradient through civil, nautical, and astronomical twilight before sunrise and after sunset
Sunrise / Sunset IconsShows an icon sunrise/sunset icon and time for sunrise and sunset on the daily chart
Civil TwilightShows an icon civil twilight icon and time for civil twilight (sun 0-6° below horizon) on the daily chart
Nautical TwilightShows an icon nautical twilight icon and time for nautical twilight (sun 6-12° below horizon) on the daily chart
Astronomical TwilightShows an icon astronomical twilight icon and time for astronomical twilight (sun 12-18° below horizon) on the daily chart
Hazard IndicatorsShows an icon at the bottom of each hour on the daily chart when heat, cold, UV, storm, or wind gust danger is elevated

Selecting CAPE also reveals a third row of weather chips related to CAPE:

Wind ShearDaily peak change in wind speed and direction between the surface and roughly 6 km up — higher values help organize storms into longer-lived, more dangerous systems
CINDaily peak Convective INhibition — the strength of the cap suppressing storm development. A strong cap can let energy build up for a more energetic storm once it finally breaks. Imagine a pot of water set to boil — CIN would be the lid on top.
Lifted IndexDaily peak atmospheric instability from the Lifted Index — more negative values mean a greater chance of severe thunderstorms
Cloud Base (LCL Height)Daily lowest Lifted Condensation Level — lower values mean moister low-level air, which favors tornado formation within a rotating storm

Tapping the ⓘ icon on the Lifted Index chip opens a dedicated explanation dialog with a reference table for reading a raw value:

Air quality also gets three chips on this chart — Allergens, Pollutants, and Particles — each plotting every metric you've enabled in that group (see Air Quality Reference below).

Air Quality Reference

27 pollutants and pollen types, grouped into three categories in Settings > Air Quality Details. Metrics marked (Europe only) come from the CAMS-Europe regional model and read as null outside Europe.

Particles

PM2.5 Secondary Inorganic (Europe only)PM2.5 formed from chemical reactions of other pollutants in the atmosphere.
PM2.5 Residential Carbon (Europe only)PM2.5 soot from residential heating and burning.
PM2.5 Total Carbon (Europe only)All PM2.5 soot, from residential and other sources combined.
Sea Salt Aerosol (Europe only)Airborne salt particles from ocean spray.

Pollutants

CO (Carbon Monoxide)A colorless, odorless gas from combustion — vehicle exhaust, fires, and fuel-burning appliances.
CO2A greenhouse gas from combustion and respiration — not a conventional air quality pollutant, shown for reference.
NO2 (Nitrogen Dioxide)A gas from vehicle exhaust and power plants that irritates the airways.
SO2 (Sulphur Dioxide)A gas from burning fossil fuels containing sulfur, e.g. coal and oil.
O3 (Ozone)Ground-level ozone formed by sunlight reacting with other pollutants — a key summertime irritant.
NH3 (Ammonia) (Europe only)A gas mostly from agriculture (fertilizer and livestock) that contributes to particle formation.
CH4 (Methane) (Europe only)A greenhouse gas from agriculture, landfills, and fossil fuel production — not a conventional air quality pollutant, shown for reference.
Formaldehyde (Europe only)A gas from vehicle exhaust and industrial processes, also a marker for other volatile organic compounds.
Glyoxal (Europe only)A byproduct of atmospheric reactions involving other volatile organic compounds.
NMVOCs (Europe only)A mix of organic gases (excluding methane) that contribute to smog formation.
PAN (Europe only)Secondary pollutants formed from sunlight, ozone, and vehicle exhaust — a component of photochemical smog.
NO (Nitrogen Monoxide) (Europe only)A gas from combustion that quickly reacts in air to form nitrogen dioxide.

Allergens (Pollen) (currently Europe only)

AlderTree pollen, typically released in late winter and early spring.
BirchTree pollen, one of the most common spring allergy triggers.
GrassReleased by grasses, typically peaking in late spring and summer.
MugwortA common late-summer weed pollen and allergy trigger.
OliveTree pollen common in Mediterranean climates during spring.
RagweedA common late-summer and autumn weed pollen allergy trigger.

Switch the unit for particle/gas metrics between µg/m³ and ppm in Settings > Air Quality Details.

Alerts and Notifications

Adapte's own hazard detection (heat, cold, wind, UV, storms, marine, flood — see Severity Levels) runs independently of any government feed. On top of that, you can turn on official alerts from:

  • United States (NWS)
  • France (Météo-France)
  • India (IMD)
  • Canada
  • Japan
  • China
  • MeteoAlarm (covering the rest of Europe)

Each source has its own Settings toggle. For notifications generally, you control:

  • Which cities send alerts — add cities to your alert list independently of which city you're currently viewing.
  • Alert hours — a start and end time (default 08:00-22:00); nothing is sent outside this window.
  • Days of the week — toggle any combination on or off (default: every day).
  • Check interval — how often Adapte checks for new alerts, from 10 minutes up to 24 hours (default: 60 minutes).
  • Minimum severity — only notify at or above a chosen level on the five-step scale (default: Danger).

Past Weather Setting

An opt-in feature (Settings > Past Weather Data, off by default). Turning it on shows this disclosure:

"Store what actually happens and what was forecast each time weather is checked to build a local history and test Open-Meteo's forecast accuracy over time. This data is stored only on this device - it is never sent to Adapte's servers - and managing or clearing it is your responsibility."

You then choose a recording granularity:

  • Daily Summary — one high/low reading per day (lighter storage).
  • Full Hourly — every hour's reading (more detail, more storage).

Past tab

  • Almanac — record high and record low for the city, plus a trend chart of daily highs and lows. See Chart Interactions for how to zoom and pin values on it.
  • Notable Patterns — automatic detection of outliers, streaks, long-term drift, and records across temperature, humidity, pressure, wind, UV, and every air quality metric you're tracking. Tap any pattern to zoom the history chart to it. Example phrasings:
    • "{metric} has been {comparison} for the last {days} days: {value} vs typical {typical}" (an outlier)
    • "{metric} has been {comparison} for {days} straight days" (a streak)
    • "{metric} has trended {direction} over the recorded period: {value} overall change" (long-term drift)
    • "{record} {metric}: {value} on {date}" (a new record)
  • Forecast Accuracy — compares what was forecast against what actually happened, once enough time has passed for a forecast to "mature." Forecast-accuracy data only builds up from live app use — a historical download can backfill actual past weather, but there is no way to know what a forecast said for an already-past date, so it can never backfill forecasts.
  • Load Missing Days — fills in any gap between your last recorded day and yesterday for the current city.
  • Load Historical Data — pulls older history from Open-Meteo's Historical Weather API, blending datasets depending on the date:

    Earlier decades are generally less precise than recent years. You pick a start and end date (or use the slider), optionally limit which datasets are used, and Adapte shows an estimated download size before committing — large ranges can take a while and use significant data.
  • Clear Past Data (Settings) permanently deletes all locally stored history for every city. This cannot be undone.

Replaying Tutorials

  • Settings > About > Reset Tutorial
  • Reset the onboarding tutorial. Replays both the Home screen tour and the Settings screen tour the next time each screen opens.

Reporting Bugs

  • When enabled in Settings a floating button is available throughout the app to send feedback or a bug report. It auto-captures a screenshot you can annotate with colored freehand marks before sending, and auto-fills app version, platform, and recent in-app error logs alongside whatever you write.

  • All data is editable to allow you to send only what you want sent. However, the more detail the developers have about the bug you report, the more likely the bug can be fixed.

  • Press the Bug report iconbug report button >> Feedback
  • When enabled in Settings a floating button is available throughout the app to send feedback or a bug report.
  • Use Feedback to tell us your thoughts, an idea, request new features, or whatever you like.
  • The feedback form is simpler, but if you are encountering a problem please use the bug report form so we may effectively diagnose and fix it.
